Jewish women being chased by Ukrainians, 1941

Image
Jewish women being chased by Ukrainians, 1941. Chased by youth armed with clubs, this woman is fleeing from a “death dealer” whose left leg can be seen at the left-hand edge of the photograph. The Lviv pogroms were the consecutive massacres of Jews living in the city of Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine),perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalists (specifically, the OUN), German death squads (Einsatzgruppen), and urban population from 30 June to 2 July, and from 25 to 29 July, during the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Ukrainian nationalists targeted Jews in the first pogrom on the pretext of their purported responsibility for the NKVD prisoner massacre in Lviv, which left behind thousands of corpses in three Lviv prisons. The subsequent massacres were directed by the Germans in the context of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. At the time of the German attack on the Soviet Union, about 160,000 Jews lived in the city; the number had swelled by tens of thousands due to the arrival of Jewish ref...

The woman who gave her eye for Freedom, 1941

The woman who gave her eye for Freedom, 1941 Albina Mali-Hočevar was a resistance fighter in Yugoslavia in World War II. Not much is known about her, and many of the sources I read about her don't seem to be creditable or they were poorly written, but here is what I could gather about her. Hočevar's father died when she was young. She dropped out of school in the 3rd grade to help support her family and siblings. In 1941, Germany invaded Yugoslavia, and Hočevar (who was 16 at the time) joined the People's Liberation Movement. She was assigned as a nurse and reportedly cried in frustration as she wanted to fight on the front lines with her comrades. It appears that as the war intensified, Hočevar fought on the front lines and worked as a nurse during different intervals of the war. She found herself getting closer and closer to the action and fought in many different battles and skirmishes. She was badly wounded twice when she was 17 and badly wounded once when she was 1...

The defiance: a prisoner in a concentration camp stares down Heinrich Himmler, who was one of the masterminds behind the holocaust, 1941 One of the most famous pictures of the entire war shows a soldier staring down Himmler, considered one of the most evil men in history. The picture was taken at Shirokaya Street Concentration Camp, which held 2,000 soviet troops.  With Himmler are other top German officials. Doing this could have resulted in instant death for him.... Read story The same day Himmler visited, 100 Jews were shot to demonstrate execution techniques. Himmler talked to a young blonde man and asked, “Are you a Jew?”. The man answered, “Yes.” Himmler asked: “Are both your parents Jews?”. Again, he replied, “Yes.” Himmler asked, “Do you have any ancestors who were not Jews?”. “No,” the man answered. “Then I can’t help you,” Himmler said. The young man was then shot in the back of the head. The soldier is not wearing a shirt to show his emaciated body. Despite being starved...
