Istvan Reiner, a 4-year-old child, poses for a portrait. He was murdered shortly after this picture was taken at the Auschwitz Concentration camp. Not a lot is known about Reiner, except that he was sent with his grandmother to Auschwitz shortly after this picture was taken and was gassed in the gas chamber. Women and children were often gassed upon arriving at the camp. Men were sometimes spared from performing physical labour, such as industrial, mining or farming jobs. The victims were led to gas chambers and were told that they were going to have a shower. Instead, people were stripped of their clothes and items and were packed into rooms where poisonous gas was released, killing all inside. The bodies were then cremated, and the ashes were sometimes used as fertiliser for crops consumed by humans.
