Plane crashes into Empire State Building On this day in 1945, a United States military plane crashes into the Empire State Building. Air traffic controllers instructed the pilot to go to Newark Airport. This took the plane to Manhattan where the instructors warned the pilot the lack of visibly of the Empire State Building, due to heavy fog. The pilot then flew the plane slowly and low to seek better visibility. Once the pilot saw the upcoming Chrysler building, he swerved the plane and this movement led the plane straight into the Empire State Building. As of result of this accident a massive hole was left in the building, the plane’s fuel exploded and put the building in flames, and 14 people were killed.
