Virginia Woman Using Online DNA Service To Find Biological Mother Accidentally Cracks 40-Year-Old Double Murder U.S. Army Private Wing O. Hom was only 20 when he left his hometown of Boston to fight against Germany during World War II. A member of Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Hom went missing in action in Cisterna di Latina, a town 45 miles south of Rome. He was officially marked MIA as of February 2, 1944, dead in 1945, and in 1949, the U.S. government declared Hom non-recoverable. After nearly 80 years, his remains have finally been identified. Using mitochondrial DNA testing, a team at the Offutt Air Force Base was able to match Hom to remains found in 1944 in Ponte Rotto, three miles from Cisterna di Latina.
