Buchenwald was a German concentration camp opened in 1937. Of the 280,000 inmates that were held at Buchenwald concentration camp, more than 56,000 people died due to insufficient food and poor conditions, as well as executions. The camp was liberated on 11 April 1945 by the US army. From 1945 to 1950, the camp was used by the Soviet occupation authorities as an internment camp: NKVD special camp No. 2. Under Soviet authority, 28,455 prisoners were held at the camp, and 7,113 of whom died. Today the remains of Buchenwald concentration camp serve as a memorial, permanent exhibition and museum.
