Bloody Sunday, Derry, Northern Ireland,January 1972. This famous image of Fr Edward Daly fearlessly waving his blood-stained handkerchief at British troops in a sign of ceasefire in an attempt to get a wounded man some medical attention has become an image to symbolise the suffering felt during the troubles. He had been shot by the 1st paratrooper regiment when they opened fire on an unarmed crowd of irish catholic civil rights marchers. 13 innocent people were murdered on the streets and one more died 5 months later due to bullet wounds. This was just one of the massacres the British troops would perform during the troubles on innocent civilians but it was also one of the worst. And photojournalist Fulvio Grimaldi remembers that day vividly. He was speaking after the death of retired Catholic Bishop of Derry Edward Daly, the man at the centre of the picture.
