A series of photos that show injured soldiers from World War I before and after combat with face prosthetics and early plastic surgery During WWI, fierce fighting took place all over the world. Many would not know, but much of the combat in WWI was hand to hand combat. The methods of fighting were no different from medieval times. Clubs, knives, swords and spears were used on a large scale. Many of these weapons left their victims with bad injuries. Plastic surgery was only in it's very early stages in WWI, so new ways to try to hide injuries were a large focus for veterans who sustained physical damage from their duties, and who often faced social rejection rather than a heroes welcome when they returned home due to their "new abnormal features". Prosthetics were made by using molds and were made using plaster. I hope that some of these soldiers got some level of comfort using these masks.
