An abandoned WW1-era ship, known as La Merced, has found a new purpose as a protective breakwater. Originally an auxiliary schooner used during World War I, it later served in the lumber trade, shuttling between Portland and California. It was later modified to transport oil from the United States to Australia and New Zealand, and it would return with grain on its voyages back. In the late 1920s, the 232-foot long La Merced was converted into a floating cannery and operated in Alaska. Approaching the end of its working life, La Merced was sold for salvage in 1965. At this time, its majestic masts were severed, and the propellers, engines, and deck fittings were removed before the schooner was relocated to Lovric's Shipyard in Washington. Today, the ship remains nestled among rocks and rubble at Lovric's Shipyard.
