Pole-sitting competitions in the Netherlands
“Paalzitten” was a Dutch sport in which participants would sit on wooden poles for hours on end trying to remain the last one standing
Competitors would relieve themselves in wooden buckets and bow out when numbness or boredom got the best of them
The sport became a fad in the US in the 20s and 30s with the record-holder Bill Penfield sitting on a flagpole for 51 days and 20 hours before a thunderstorm forced him down
Monks would often compete and win the pole-sitting events in the Netherlands
