Racists harass a 6 year old black girl by making a doll of her and placing it in a coffin, all because the girl went to an all whites school, 1960

The year was 1960. Racial tensions in America were high. Federal laws were changing, which allowed African Americans to attend schools that were originally meant for white children only. 6 year old Ruby Bridges was the first black child to attend an all whites school in the South. When this news began to spread around the community, racists began to harass the little girl, who only wanted to have the same educational opportunities as white children

This all happened in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bridges had to be taught alone and ate her lunch alone for a whole year. She had to be kept in the principals office for her first day as the school was in chaos. Parents withdrew their children and lined the streets to verbally abuse the child. Ruby had to be escorted to the school by 4 marshals and her mother everyday for the entire year. Some parents withdrew their children permanently

Initially, Rubys father was scared of his daughter's safety, but her mother was insistent that Ruby was to have the same opportunities when it came to her education

Ruby showed incredible courage. She did not miss a day, and was not frightened by anyone or their unkind words, except for the coffin incident which is shown above. She finished elementary school and then high school. She is still alive today and she has dedicated her life to racial activism
