Even a tough Viking sometimes got sick.
A study from 2014 shows that the Vikings battled with nasty parasitic diseases that they probably got from living so close up and down to their livestock. Although the Vikings were harsh and feared in large parts of Europe, being a Viking wasn't always fun. The Vikings were plagued by several forms of intestinal worms. It establishes a Danish study from 2014. The study, made on 1,000-year-old parasite eggs from Viking feces, shows that both Vikings and their domestic animals were plagued by parasites The study investigated the content of parasite eggs in soil samples from a Viking settlement near Viborg. The soil samples include: from a latrine used during the period 1018-1030. The study showed that in the soil samples there were parasite eggs from both coiled worms and human worms as well as the parasite liver bovine or sheep liver.
