No shame, 1996 Moment naked blonde waitress, 23, delayed tennis final
A woman runs onto the tennis court in Wimbledon naked and surprises the fans and tennis players, who don't seem to be too bothered by her presence. It turned out the mystery lady was a 23-year-old college student Melissa Johnson, who worked as a waitress nearby. Richard Krajicek and Malivai Washington were both playing that day.
The two were just about to start playing the men’s final. Washington later said: “I saw these things wobbling around, and, jeez, she smiled at me. I got flustered, and three sets later, I was gone.” That old excuse, eh?" Photographer: Andy Hooper With 2017's tournament starting on Monday, Daily Star Online looks back on arguably the most famous streaking moment in sport. The 1996 men’s showpiece between Richard Krajicek and MaliVai Washington was overshadowed before it even started. As the players were smiling for the pre-match pictures, Melissa Johnson, 23 at the time, ran onto the court with just a white pinny.
The posh audience were gobsmacked as the waitress at the tournament put on the X-rated show. Dutchman Krajicek won in straight sets after Washington famously revealed he was distracted by her. He later said: “I saw these things wobbling around and, jeez, she smiled at me. “I got flustered and three sets later I was gone.” At the time Melissa revealed why she did it to reporters. She said: "I'm a naughty girl – and I've got a wild streak in me." "I just said to the people I was working with, 'I'm going to do it, I am going to get my kit off'."
Tennis fans, including the Duke and Duchess of Kent, roared with laughter at Wimbledon's first ever streak. "But my employers were very po-faced," Melissa added. "They demanded my pinny back immediately. I suppose that means I have got the sack." Melissa had only just gained a design degree at Manchester Metropolitan University. "It was my suggestion entirely," she said. "I did it for a bit of a laugh, although I was encouraged by all the others. "I knew it had never been done before – and it had to be done, really, didn't it?" She added: "When the players came out I thought, 'It's now or never', so I just did it. I didn't feel embarrassed. "I was going to wear a dress but decided to wear my pinny instead." As she ran, Washington even got into the spirit of things and pulled up his shirt to reveal his chest.
