One of the most infamous true crime cases in Swedish history is that of mass murderer, Tore Hedin.

A mass murderer who became a police officer investigating his own murders. In 1943, he burnt down a local brewery. At just 16, this would be the first of many serious crimes. On 28 November, 1951 he murdered his best friend after a particularly heated poker game, robbing him in the process. During this time, Hedin was the local police officer and was able to cover his own tracks by destroying tonnes of evidence. Almost a year later, Hedin committed a string of heinous crimes that shocked the nation. He confronted his fiancée, Ulla Östberg, and broke off their engagement for unknown reasons. After assaulting her and handcuffing her, he was fired from the Police Force and his life began to spiral out of control: Firslty, he travelled to his parent’s house, killed them with an axe, and set their house on fire. Still enraged from the brutal crime he had just committed, he travelled to the retirement home where his ex-fiancée worked hoping to find her and kill her. Ulla was nowhere to be seen, so he blocked off all the exits and set the building aflame. Five innocent pensioners and the matron were killed, just because of Hedin’s spiteful ways. Eventually, a frightened Ulla was found and brutally hacked to death by her ex. After fleeing the scene, Tore Hedin drove to Brösarp lake, wrote a suicide note featuring his confessions, and drowned himself. His weighted down body was found a few days later, and the strange case was finally over. Above is a photograph of Hedin investigating evidence in his own murder case, and it was the only time Swedish police allowed a psychic medium to participate in the official investigation.
