In 2018, scientists discovered a set of footprints that went on for 1.5 km as part of an excavation. These footprints were not made recently, but over 10,000 years ago.
Discovered in White Sands National Park in New Mexico, USA, 427 footprints were discovered. These prints are thought to have belonged to a young woman. However, a fascinating detail was discovered that the footprints sometimes varied in-depth.
At various points of her journey, her right foot was sometimes deeper into the ground than her left foot and vice versa. It was then discovered that tiny footprints that are thought to have belonged to a three-year-old human were also found at some points alongside the woman's footprints. It is theorized that the uneven foot depth is due to the woman carrying her child.
The footprints, which date back to the late ice age along a dried-up lake, are not the only footprints discovered. Nearby, both mammoth footprints and ground sloth footprints were discovered. Ground sloths were giant sloths that could be as tall as 8 feet, and were possibly aggressive to the presence of humans. The footprints that were found around the ground sloth showed that it suddenly stood on its hind legs, indicating that he may have become defensive. These sloths also ate meat, meaning they could have viewed humans as a food source.
Other animals such as bears also stand on their hind legs when facing a threat, as it makes them appear bigger.
The footprints also matched a quick walk, indicating that the woman was in a rush and she may have been tired but kept going.
The footprints paint a picture of a dangerous and hostile environment that early humans found themselves in. Despite the outlandish and bizarre creatures that once existed, modern humans can relate to one aspect of this story, and that is the primal instinct that a parent has to protect and defend their child from harm. And still, despite so many changes over thousands of years, some things never change, and that includes the love a mother will have for her child.
