According to rumours, some soldiers were beheaded on the bridge way by AKP civillians.
Rumours also have it that he set it up himself, a small group of them, then used them to fake a larger attempt and arrest his rivals and political enemies and secure his place as a dictator
Him masterminding this whole thing from behind though is just a conspiracy theory with no evidence or logical explanation.
This is purely speculation as there is absolutely no evidence supporting this claim.
I'm staunchly anti Erdogan, and I can tell you this, anyone who has any idea about Turkish politics and domestic affairs would be able to tell you that's a ridiculous claim.
First of all, the people who were involved in setting up the coup were high ranked generals. Including the Head Commander of the Turkish Air Force, a man who is so high up he reports directly to the Erdogan cabinet.
All of those people are serving lifetime sentences right now. How do you think he convinced all these high-ranking generals to overthrow himself? Do you think he planted the idea on their heads like in the Inception?
On the other hand, there are tons of documents and chats about the coup plans that were confirmed by the courts, but literally not a single shred of evidence or testimony about anything relating to Erdogan A good number of those generals were under the watch of the Intelligence Agency ever since Erdogan had a fallout with Gulen and were about the cracked down upon. They played their last hand.
What happened was mostly likely an actual coup where Erdogan capitalized on the situation to arrest his rivals and political enemies. During the coup Erdogan wasn't even sure what was happening at first, on a confirmed phone call Umit Dundar, commander of the First of Army called Erdogan and he said he is going to fight the coup. He is a known Kemalist, so this confirmed they weren't the ones behind the thing.
On the phone call, Erdogan asks him how he can trust him. He then says, "You can ask me to Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Ultranationalist party, a known anti-Gulen persona." He confirms, and Erdogan lands in Istanbul and gets escorted by Umit Dundar's soldiers. From this point on, Erdogan starts the populism and capitalizes on the situation to crack down on Gulen.
Known Erdogan allies like Turgut Aslan, director of the counterterrorism unit of the police, got shot in the head by the coup plotters as well.
You can go to eksisozluk, a Reddit like online forum in Turkey. You can search up the names of some of the generals involved. You can see entries from 2004 about some of these generals where people are accusing them of being connected to Gulen. One of the high ranked ones daughter is literally married to Gulen's son-in-law.
Former Kemalist generals like Ilker Basbug were warning the people about 4 years before the coup that there might be a coup coming by the Gulenists.
EDIT: HAHAHA, I'm being downvoted, I guess people who have no idea about my country read some news headlines and got everything figured out. Good job, Reddit.
