A naked woman who fell from a building in North End yesterday is in a stable condition in hospital.

The dramatic incident happened at about 3.30pm when a woman fell from the roof of the building above the 99p shop at the bottom of North End. She was seriously injured when she hit the floor and was given first aid by a passer-by until ambulance crew arrived to take her to St George’s Hospital. Police say she is now in a stable condition. The drama began just after 3pm when the woman described as being in her 30s, started having an argument with staff at BrightHouse in North End. An eye-witness who did not wish to be named told the Croydon Guardian the woman was in the weekly payment store “ranting and raving” with staff about filling in forms. “She said she needs to go home and that she was feeling unwell,” he said, adding that she told staff she needed to go to Mayday Hospital before jumping on a table and falling over. He said: “All of a sudden she ran to the secure door which a member of staff had unlockd via a code. “Other members of staff follwed to grab her, as she was hitting the man that had opened the door. “She stripped off naked and then ran out a fire exit of the back of the shop and started kicking the door.” Employees called the police who immediately started looking for the woman. According the witness, 10 minutes later she was seen running naked along the roofs above a row of shops including Ann Summers. He said: “The staff at BrightHouse responded very well and were even trying to talk her down or catch her but police moved them on.” Another witness Pritesh Patel, 24, said: "She was running across the ledge of the building above the Ann Summers shop. "She was yelling that someone was chasing her and jumped across to the HSBC building. "She didn't quite make it and was hanging onto a ledge, but managed to pull herself up. "There were four guys yelling at the police that they could catch her if she fell but the police were just telling them to get back. "Everyone was screaming, then she tried to jump across to the next ledge but didn't quite make it and she dropped just by the 99p shop." He said she was running along a ledge that was spiked to stop pigeons from perching on it, but was in such a state, she did not seem to notice the sharp metal points. Another witness said: "The woman was trying her best to hang on to the building but her strength wouldn’t let her. "She was left hanging by one arm for a split second before she fell. "I was terrified." Pannicked onlookers called for emergency services and an air ambulance was despatched to help the injured woman. A police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.26pm following an altercation between a woman and a member of staff in a shop in North End Croydon. “Officers were called to the shop and attempted to find her. “Subsequently, the woman fell from a roof of a building. First aid was provided by a passerby until an ambulance arrived. “She was taken to a South London hospital suffering from multiple injuries. “She is in a stable condition. “No arrests have been made.” A London Ambulance Service spokesman said the woman was taken away by by ground ambulance, attended by the doctor from the air ambulance, which was also at the scene. He said: "We got calls at 3.45pm to report a fall from a height on North End in Croydon. "We sent one single responder, two ambulance crews, the air ambulance and a duty manager to the scene. "Out staff treated one patient, a woman reported to be in her 30s, and took the patient to St George's Hospital."
