Girl survives falling onto 3,000-volt cable after taking selfie while dangling over bridge

A 13-year-old girl fell from a railway bridge as she tried to take a selfie and landed on powerful, live electric cables. Miraculously, the teenager survived the fall, though she was left with major burns from the 3,000-volt cables. She spent an hour dangling from the cables 13ft above train tracks, until a train driver spotted her and cut the power. The incident happened in a rural area in central Russia, and the girl has not been named. She was eventually lifted off the lines and to safety, before being taken to hospital where doctors found she had second and third degree burns to both arms, shoulders, wrists, and left foot. Yulia Makova, an official with the prosecutor’s office in Ulyanovsk, said the girl was returning home from swimming in a river with friends. She said: ‘The girl decided to make a selfie and paused at the bridge as they were crossing it,’ said Yulia Makova, an official with the prosecutor’s office in Ulyanovsk region. ‘Her female friend was chatting on her phone. The friend heard a shriek and turned to see the girl hanging on the cables. ‘She doesn’t know how it happened.’ The train driver, who has not been identified, recalled how he radioed ahead so the supply could be turned off. As locals finally became aware of the dangerous situation, they held a rug below her to catch her in case she slipped off the wires. The driver said: ‘I couldn’t believe my eyes when I realised that this must have been a human – a girl. ‘Her body was writhing from excruciating pain, but she was aware of what was happening and was calling for help.’ It is feared she could have been killed if she fell from the cables onto the train track below.

She fell unconscious after being saved, and when she woke in hospital had no memory of the incident, medics said.
