Ivan the Terrible kills his son in a fit of rage
This painting, which was painted by Russian artist Ilya Repin, is one of Russia's most famous paintings. It shows the moment after Ivan the Terrible kills his son, Ivan Ivanovich. Ivan the Terrible had a complex personality. He is one of the most infamous Tsars in Russian history. He was described as intelligent and devout, but also prone to paranoia, rage, and episodic outbreaks of mental instability that increased with age. In one episode, he killed his son (in real life) and this painting is to capture what Repin thought the pair's reaction would be. The reason why Ivan the Terrible killed his son is because he had just beaten his son's pregnant wife for wearing promiscuous clothes. The beating was so bad that it caused a miscarriage. Ivanovich then confronted his father, who smashed him in the head with his sceptre. It took him 3 days to die. Ivan holds his child with eyes full of sadness and regret, but inklings of anger remain. His child has tears in his eyes and he grips his father's arm the best he can, which can be interpreted as signs of forgiveness or helplessness, as well as brain damage. The painting is one of the most famous paintings ever and represents ideas of political debate, historical insight, and the human condition as a whole.
Repin said it took a huge amount of time and constant correcting to make the painting. Repin also said he did not enjoy painting it because of the constant reworks, but the painting is considered to be a masterpiece by art critics worldwide. The painting above is a 3-D version as it is of higher quality to zoom in on. The zoom edit is done by myself and I could not achieve this quality with images of the original portrait. Also, the 3-D aspect adds some more realistic features to the painting. Some of you may not like that (and I agree) but it's for the sake of quality more than anything!
