Meet Altamura man, the best neanderthal skeleton ever found
Altamura man is a name given to a skeleton of a neanderthal man who was found in a sinkhole in Italy in 1993.
Altamura man is one of the oldest neanderthal skeletons ever found, and is the best example of a neanderthal skeleton found to date. It is an incredible treasure in the world of history.
The early human is thought to have fell down the hole and starved to death. Overtime, his bones became a part of the cave walls, which allowed for excellent preservation. The bones look is if they are just a few hundred years old, but they could be as old as 172,000 years old in astonishingly good condition.
DNA extracted from the man found that he was a male neanderthal and his DNA was the first full neanderthal DNA sequence to be extracted. His skeleton remains in the cave as excavating it could damage it.
Neanderthals were early humans who appeared around 350,000 years ago. Despite being dedicated in modern media as dumb and savage, they were likely just as intelligent as homo sapiens. They made tools to the same quality as homo sapiens and were overall far more physically stronger. They are thought to be the first early humans to add herbs to food and were interested in creating art. They died off 40,000 years ago, with only a number of theories to try to explain this.
Neanderthals are known for their large brow ridges, stocky skeletons and large jaws, defining features of their physiological complex.
